As a boxing fan who has hosted the world’s greatest prize fights at your world-class hotels, we are appealing to you, President Donald J. Trump, to pardon heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson.
Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight boxing champion of the world, is long overdue a pardon. Johnson paved the way for boxers like Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson. But he was the victim of Jim Crow justice and was wrongfully convicted by an all-white jury in June 1913 under the Mann Act for dating a white woman.
This unjust prosecution ultimately tarnished his legacy and ended his career. But Senator Harry Reid and Senator John McCain have taken up this issue and are working towards a pardon. We appeal to you, President Trump, to support their effort.
Johnson was born the son of former slaves in Texas and in his career as a boxer he broke the rules of the segregated Jim Crow era by fighting and beating a white boxer. But he also dated white women – eventually marrying one. This infuriated many southern bigots and in 1913 authorities sentenced him under the Mann Act to a year and a day in prison for crossing state lines in the company of a white girlfriend.
The Mann Act (named after Congressman James Robert Mann) was a law passed on 25th June 1910. In its original form the anti-prostitution law prohibited white slavery and the interstate transport of females for immoral purposes. However, its ambiguous definition of ‘immorality’ allowed selective prosecutions of the kind inflicted on Jack Johnson.
This unjust prosecution ultimately tarnished Jack Johnson’s legacy. Pardoning Mr Johnson will not only correct a grave injustice but will boost your popularity with African-American voters and help to ensure your successful re-election in 2020. #PardonJackJohnson

  1. Thanks and please keep reminder up Altho’ in the geezer demographic and not expert on boxing stats, in middle school I had a serious crush on Floyd Patterson (not to say didn’t appreciate his opponent later to become a hero–in fact later while teaching Interpersonal Communication, used his “boop boop, Floyd” as an example of verbal turning points in opponency). You may think schoolgirl crushes foolish, but my Intermediate Algebra teacher was a boxing fan and my taste helped me get a B outta the course. Did not know about this guy–he was screwed and will follow with you. P.S. Not all Trumpkians are vile racists, it’s the bought media agitprop.

    • Thanks for your comment as always, Clare. I’m, of course, aware that not all Trumpkians are racists – I’m one of them. By the way, do you have a blog of your own, Clare? What you’ve described of your background intrigues me …

  2. Thanks for your interest. My former resume, since am now retired, was divided between my “straight” earn a living raise a family one and other interests, sponsoring member of the Edgar Cayce organization which also included interest in Jungian psychology, dream interpretation and parapsychology. Went back to academia, got an M.A. in Communication, emphasis Comm Theory and Cross Cultural. Which is where I taught the department basic curriculum on graduate teaching assistantship. In cross cultural classes, became fascinated with “the African diaspora” as basically a religious and cultural phenomenon. Which still informs “geopolitics” in my view–most insular ‘Muricans of any race are not aware that Brazil has upwards of 93 million people who practice the African religions alongside other ones and find no conflict. I have lived in Hawaii and the Virgin Islands not as a gated community person but as one of the tribe and find that people outside the continental U.S. get along with mutual respect when not unduly targeted with the imprecations of agendas (euphemism liberty taken).

About blog, do not have one mainly because we are in “the storm before the calm” and if The Republic overcomes massive attempts by the wrong people to globalize–hence the infamy–there will be a massive education necessity to bring people up to speed about existing technology, the existence of 22 galactic confederations and their quasi presence in our local solar system.
I am more radical than complacent about this–people are easily enslaved and confined in ideologue bubbles because they are universally lied to. And yet at the same time a number of good-willed folks all over the planet basically want the same things.

Recent development, a friend in Bangladesh who blogs and has an alternative radio gig asked to use a piece of mine and I said yep but without attribution because some of the geopolitik assertions are the kind that get people whacked.

In your case, suggest this summation is too long for a “comment” .would really like to elaborate, for instance, my views on African diaspora, how it failed in the U.S. but partially succeeded elsewhere etc etc, My E mail not for publication is claretempleton@windstream.net and if you’ve got an “off blog” one that sustains the loquaciousness of the presenile, would love to discuss directions, avenues, reflections off-site. I celebrate 8 decades of extremely varied and maybe even providentially led encounters, excursions. Oh–for information current, Word Press failed to send me multiple of your recent postings –I checked and was still listed as subscriber so some kind of fluke. Not to worry, am enjoying catching up.

My first job at age 16 was as columnist for local newspaper which is where I cultivated the breezy neologisms caper; resuscitated it for Facebook comments with great success. If you “FB” I have some articles linked, always commentary on my FB “wall” but I do not send stuff to listed people as in Facebook venue it creates a sequential mess. My genuine age provided to assure you am not hitting on you and also to observe the irony that when I was younger, it was presumed from studious bent that I was much older; and now that am older than anybody, my use of vernacular makes me appear younger (except anybody 60 or older can spot recycled 50’s vocabulary). I am leaving out a lot of my more woo woo adventures; this more along lines of the “straight” resume. No, not an “abductee”, yes a truth is out there XFiler , etc etc PS This is not to obviate future actual Commentary. One of the newagey notions is “co-creation” which the snot out of comments whichgo off on tangents or erupt into group therapy.

    • ‘Long and distinguished’ doesn’t do your resume the justice it deserves. Thank you for being so detailed. I’d love to reach out to you via email and will do so as soon as I get some breathing space from my presently hectic schedule. Thanks again, Clare 😊
